How to Clear Cache on Instagram (iPhone and Android)

To clear the Instagram cache on Android, go to Settings, then Apps, then Instagram, then Storage, then tap Clear Cache. On iPhone, there is no cache-clearing option, so you need to delete the Instagram app and reinstall it from the App Store. Neither method deletes your account, posts, followers, or messages.

Here is exactly how to do it on each device.

What is the Instagram cache?

The Instagram cache is temporary data that the app stores on your phone to load content faster. It includes thumbnails of photos you have viewed, profile pictures, story previews, and other visual data. This cache builds up over time and can use a significant amount of storage.

How much storage does Instagram cache use?

Usage level Typical cache size When to clear
Light user (browse 15 min/day) 200-500 MB Every 2-3 months
Moderate user (30-60 min/day) 500 MB - 1.5 GB Monthly
Heavy user (1+ hours/day) 1.5 - 4 GB Every 2 weeks

Clearing the cache does not delete your account data. Your photos, videos, messages, followers, and settings are all stored on Instagram's servers, not on your phone.

How to clear Instagram cache on Android

Android lets you clear the Instagram cache without deleting the app.

Steps:

  1. Open Settings on your phone
  2. Tap Apps (or Apps and Notifications on some devices)
  3. Scroll down and tap Instagram
  4. Tap Storage (or Storage and Cache)
  5. Tap Clear Cache

Do not tap "Clear Data" or "Clear Storage" as this will log you out of Instagram and delete your local preferences. "Clear Cache" only removes temporary files.

After clearing the cache, Instagram may load slightly slower for a few minutes while it rebuilds the cache with fresh data. This is normal.

How to clear Instagram cache on iPhone

Apple does not allow apps to have a manual cache-clearing option. The only way to clear the Instagram cache on iPhone is to delete and reinstall the app.

Steps:

  1. Long-press the Instagram app icon on your home screen
  2. Tap Remove App (or Delete App)
  3. Tap Delete App to confirm
  4. Open the App Store
  5. Search for Instagram and tap the download icon to reinstall
  6. Log back in with your username and password

All your account data (posts, followers, messages, settings) will be intact because it is stored on Instagram's servers. The only thing you lose is the cached temporary data, which is exactly what you want to clear.

Tip: Make sure you know your Instagram password before deleting the app. If you use two-factor authentication, have your authentication method ready.

How to clear your Instagram search history

Your search history is separate from the cache. Clearing it removes the list of accounts and hashtags you have searched for.

Steps:

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile
  2. Tap the three-line menu (top right)
  3. Tap Your Activity
  4. Tap Recent Searches
  5. Tap Clear All to remove your entire search history

You can also remove individual searches by tapping the X next to each one.

Understanding what gets deleted and what stays is important before you clear anything.

What gets removed (cache):

  • Temporary image and video thumbnails
  • Previews of stories and reels you have viewed
  • Locally stored visual data
  • Temporary app files

What stays (server data):

  • Your posts, reels, and stories
  • Your followers and following lists
  • Your direct messages
  • Your account settings and bio
  • Your saved posts and collections
  • Your login credentials (on Android, with Clear Cache only)

When should you clear your Instagram cache?

Clear your Instagram cache when you notice any of these issues:

  • Instagram is running slowly or lagging
  • The app crashes or freezes frequently
  • Images or videos are not loading properly
  • Your phone is running low on storage
  • Instagram is showing outdated content or old profile pictures
  • The app is using an unusually large amount of storage

If clearing the cache does not fix performance issues, try updating the app to the latest version or restarting your phone.

Frequently asked questions

Does clearing Instagram cache delete my photos?

No. Clearing the cache only removes temporary files stored on your phone. Your photos, videos, reels, and stories are stored on Instagram's servers and remain completely unaffected. You will not lose any content by clearing the cache.

How often should I clear my Instagram cache?

For most users, clearing the cache once a month is sufficient. If you use Instagram heavily (more than an hour per day), clearing it every two weeks can help maintain performance. There is no harm in clearing it more frequently, but the app will load slightly slower for a few minutes each time while it rebuilds the cache.

Will clearing cache log me out of Instagram?

On Android, tapping "Clear Cache" will not log you out. Tapping "Clear Data" or "Clear Storage" will log you out. On iPhone, since you have to delete and reinstall the app, you will need to log back in after reinstalling.

Does clearing cache affect the Instagram algorithm?

No. The cache is local data stored on your phone. The Instagram algorithm uses server-side data (your engagement patterns, interests, and interactions) to determine what content to show you. Clearing your local cache has no effect on what the algorithm shows you.

Why does Instagram use so much storage?

Instagram caches images, videos, stories, and reels that you view so they load faster next time. If you scroll through a lot of content daily, this cache grows quickly. Instagram also pre-loads content for your feed and Explore page, which adds to the storage usage. Regular cache clearing keeps this under control.
